Oakland, CA…January 28, 2010 – Attend the Oakland Zoo’s Conservation Speaker Series featuring Jay Holcomb of the International Bird Rescue Research Center on Thursday, January 28, 2010.. For the past 24 years, Jay Holcomb has led IBRRC as it has responded to more than 200 domestic and international oil spills. Jay pioneered the search and rescue program at the Exxon Valdez oil spill, managing the entire rehabilitation program that cared for over 1,600 birds.
Holcomb also played a key role in managing the rescue and rehabilitation of 20,000 oiled African Penguins. Join us for an evening of inspiring ‘stories from the frontline’ and find out how a Bay Area oil spill in 1971 gave birth to an international bird rescue team that turned heroism into a science.
Since 1971, International Bird Rescue Research Center IBRRC has been a pioneer in the rescue and rehabilitation of aquatic birds. Known throughout the world for its work with oil spills and oiled wildlife, the organization has been on the frontline of rescue and research that has saved the lives of thousands of animals.
The Speaker Series event begins with a reception at 6:30pm and is followed a lecture at 7:00pm. The cost for this event is $10-$20 per person. Funds raised from the event will be donated to the International Bird Rescue Center. The Oakland Zoo's Conservation Speaker Series is held in the Marian Zimmer Auditorium of Maddie's Center for Science and Environmental Education.
