Oakland, Calif. – The tall ship Hawaiian Chieftain returns to Oakland next month to offer walk-on tours, three-hour Adventure Sails, and educational programs for area students. The topsail ketch is currently on a six-month tour of California ports, titled “Hands-On History of Youth,” which refers to its primary mission of bringing living history experiences to young people. The ship is scheduled to arrive at Jack London Square, 446 Water St., Oakland, at noon February 9 and fire a cannon salute to the city.
Shortly after her arrival, Hawaiian Chieftain will open for walk-on tours from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The ship will be open for visitors on these additional dates and times: Feb. 10-12, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 13-15, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 16-19, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 20, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A $3 donation per person is appreciated.
The ship will offer public Adventure Sails, which feature an opportunity for guests to help sail a real tall ship, as well as maritime storytelling and a sea shanty. Adventure Sails are scheduled at 2 p.m. on Feb. 13, 14, and 20. Tickets are $55 adults, $45 students/seniors/active military, $35 children 12 and under. To purchase tickets, visit www.historicalseaport.org or call 800-200-5239.
Launched in 1988, Hawaiian Chieftain is a steel-hulled replica of a typical European merchant trader of the turn of the nineteenth century. The vessel is 103 feet, nine inches long overall, 22 feet at the beam, and her mainmast is 75 feet off the water. The modern ship was acquired by the Historical Seaport in 2004 after a long career in the San Francisco Bay Area. Lady Washington, which normally accompanies Hawaiian Chieftain during her California tours, will be at her home port of Aberdeen, Wash. during the Hawaiian Chieftain’s Oakland visit. Shipwrights are replacing Lady Washington’s diesel auxiliary engine with a new engine that meets California emissions standards.
